Bathroom Repair

The bathroom itself deserves special attention. Its repair should be approached with a high degree of responsibility, because it often has not only temperature jumps, but also the humidity fluctuations. Therefore, a clear sequence of actions is important in the repair, and for this you need to initially plan the entire course of work.

Before and After Bathroom Repair

Why to plan the repair

In fact, the planning stage itself determines the basis for the entire further front of work.

Writing a competent and rational sequence of actions during the repair allows you to not only understand what building materials will be needed in the process, but also to imagine what the final result will be.

Making visual plans or drawings will help to decide how utilities should be laid and what appliances will be needed during the operation of the bathroom.

Of course, you should be prepared for the fact that planning is quite a long process and not always easy, even if you have chosen to seek professional advice from a designer. However, sooner or later all the disparate elements will add up to a big picture. And then you can already proceed directly to further stages of repair.

How to save money

You're familiar with the saying that a miser pays twice? For some reason in the pursuit of cheaper materials, we forget that, as a rule, the highest quality building materials that will allow the repair to last more than one year, simply can not cost a penny. We can give a simple example: saving too much money even on the mixture for grouting the joints between the tiles promotes fungus, and that, believe me, is fraught with another repair literally a couple of years later.

Quality grout for tiles

Do not forget that in the bathroom, it is not recommended to use cheap building materials, because due to temperature changes and high humidity they will last significantly less than their higher-quality and, accordingly, more expensive counterparts. It is possible to use not the highest quality glue for tiles in the kitchen, but in the bathroom it can not be done categorically.

But, nevertheless, this does not mean that there is no single way to save on the purchase of building materials. For example, many construction stores offer a flexible system of discounts, including savings. Do not miss the chance to take advantage of them. Or you can do part of the work yourself, without resorting to the help of specialists.

By and large, this applies to types of work that do not require special skills. In other words, if possible, save on price, but do not skimp on quality.

The order and principle of disassembly

It would seem that the stage of dismantling does not require any special preparation. Many people may give up and think that they can break somehow by themselves, but also there are some rules for disassembly:

  • The main principle is to dismantle, not to break. And it's not about preserving old building materials. It's about safety. Think about it: destroying everything around you, you run the risk of harming yourself;
  • If the repair is major, followed by a replacement of all surfaces, the floor and ceiling must be cleaned immediately to the floor slabs, from the walls to repel the tiles down to the concrete or brick. Otherwise in this case can not;
  • if there is paint on the walls, it must also be removed. Why? The answer is simple: the old layer of paint will not hold the adhesive;
  • You need to completely clean the room, including the old pipes and electrical wiring. The bathroom should be prepared for the following steps;
  • perhaps the floor deserves less attention than the walls, because they need to be cleaned with the utmost care;
  • Of course, the dismantling also applies to the removal of faucets and plumbing fixtures;
  • cleaned walls should be treated with primer, the ceiling - putty.

Installation of communications

As a rule, the next stage of work is the replacement of pipes. If you are planning a major replacement, then start with the riser, and then you can mount new pipes.

At the same stage of the replacement of the wiring. Designate for yourself where you will locate outlets, switches. Replace all wires.

Pipes when replacing can be carried along the walls, and you can hide them. The second option, of course, is more aesthetic.

If the pipes are made of metal-plastic, their service life is long enough, and they are not threatened by rust. To embed them in the wall is already quite common in repairs. It is only necessary to make a recess in the wall for the pipes, and after that to seal them with mortar and put on top of the tile.

Installing communications

It is advisable to hide the wiring to avoid moisture on it, but you must first decide what kind of wiring it will have. The main role here is played by objects of power consumption. After all, in the bathroom there may be outlets for hair dryers, lights, etc. Use a cable with triple insulation. In the case of the bathroom, it is more appropriate.

Wiring is also mounted in pre-prepared troughs. It should be borne in mind that the old wiring can not withstand the load from the various devices of energy consumption. After all, in the bathroom can be connected and water heaters, and washing machine and hair dryer. This issue is also worth thinking about.

Installing new plumbing fixtures

As a rule, plumbing devices are installed at the final stage of work, already after finishing. This is done so that the plumbing is not damaged during repair and finishing work. In addition, you will be able to access all surfaces without problems.

The sink and bathtub should be installed particularly carefully so as not to damage the finish. The faucet can be mounted in advance.

Floor waterproofing

Not everyone understands the correct meaning of this term. To avoid going into details, we can simply explain by an example: if you have a good quality waterproofing in your bathroom, in case of a pipe burst or other trouble the neighbors on the floor below will not get up to 100 liters of water.

Of course, you must realize that if the riser pipe bursts and a serious flood happens, it will not be able to help much, but it will save you from small leaks. Just there will be time to shut off the water.

By and large, waterproofing is the treatment of the floor and the lower part of the walls with bitumen mastic and rubberized insulation, so that these surfaces are sealed. In the simplest case waterproofing can even be done with cellophane film.

Leveling surfaces and the possibility of not doing it

Of course, in a good way to level the walls is necessary. There are such "specialists" in tile laying, who do with a thick layer of glue when working. But this is fraught with consequences:

  • First, such layers of glue will simply float. No reliable adhesion of the solution to the surface is out of the question;
  • Secondly, you will definitely spend more money on glue alone.

And you can simply level the walls with drywall or plaster. Plaster is more appropriate for large irregularities in the walls. And if the walls are quite even, you do not need to put many layers of material. In such situations, puttying may be enough.

Smoothing walls with gypsum board

If you are planning to plaster the walls, then the floor should be done afterwards. If you are straightening the walls with plasterboard, it is better to start with the floor.

Finishing

After levelling the surfaces and solving the issues with the installation of communications, you can begin to finish. It is useful to know that the ceiling can be covered with emulsion paint: and it looks beautiful, and moisture drops do not accumulate. But you can also mount panels or use a stretch ceiling. This stage of the work is carried out after the other finishing.

If you plan to cover the space under the bath with a screen, you can save money on tiles, not laying them on the floor under the bath. It is recommended to start tiling with the walls, and then proceed to the floor. The lowest row of wall tiles is laid after finishing the floor. Pay attention to the fact that after laying the tiles, you should let them stand for a few days. Only then can you start grouting the seams.

Doors should be installed after other finishing work is finished, as with the ceiling. Choose a door with a good finish, such as laminated or lacquered. But at the moment a good solution would be and glass doors that are tolerant of moisture. Well, and at the end, the finishing touches remain: the installation of lamps, a mirror and other accessories.

In general, the bathroom renovation is not as terrible as it might seem at first glance. The main thing is to understand where to start, because planning is the basis for success.
