The ceiling in the bathroom - choose the best

Bathroom Ceiling - choosing the best ceiling!

Previously, the traditional type of finishing the ceiling in the bathroom was considered a whitewash. Today the offer of the market allows you to come up with a more elegant way of facing with the use of various materials that will not only add zest to your interior, but also make it memorable. What kind of ceiling in the bathroom can be done?

Features of the choice of material for finishing the ceiling

When choosing a material for the ceiling cladding in the bathroom, you should consider the peculiarities of this room. The ceiling must be durable and be able to withstand frequent washing and contact with water and various products. Steam and condensation can render some materials unusable in a very short time.

Another point to be guided by - the cost of material and installation work. The larger the room and the more complex the finish, the more acute the question becomes: is it necessary to spend a huge amount on finishing the bathroom ceiling? In addition, the height of the bathroom is often insufficient to implement the idea with the use of complex designs.

Paint for the ceiling: advantages and disadvantages

One of the most budgetary ways to bring the ceiling in order is paint. Since the conditions of such a room as a bathroom differ significantly from the conditions of living rooms, the choice of paint should be approached responsibly enough and pay attention to its properties.

The most popular today are water-based compositions. Polyvinyl acetate paints can immediately be discarded, because they are only suitable for absolutely dry rooms. Silicone or acrylic paints are the best options. They are resistant to abrasion and have optimal water vapour permeability.

Advantages This method of finishing the ceiling in the bathroom are:

  • unlimited color palette;
  • water-based compositions are odorless, perfectly withstand high humidity and do not absorb dirt, dry quickly, some have additional antibacterial properties;
  • such ceilings are easy to clean, resistant to various detergents, do not turn yellow;
  • preserves the height of the room;
  • affordable price.

Disadvantages - No type of finish is without them:

  • painting requires a perfectly smooth and degreased surface, so the preparatory work can take a long time and require additional costs;
  • less aesthetic appearance compared to other finishes.

Overall, this is a pretty good option, especially for low concrete ceilings, but there are still plenty of available finishes.

Types

Despite the use of different materials, all finishing options have similarities in terms of installation. For low ceilings, this is an essential point, as 5 to 10 cm of height is taken under the mounts.

Stretch

This type of ceiling is the most advantageous for the bathroom. It is made of durable material based on vinyl. That is why it is able to withstand the constant humidity in the room, temperature fluctuations, steam and other factors. Undeniable advantage is that the suspended ceiling is able to protect your apartment from flooding by the neighbors from above. The film is able to withstand a huge volume of water. After fixing the problem, the ceiling dries and takes its original appearance.

The appearance also deserves separate praise. This is the most aesthetic version of the ceiling. However, for such a pleasure will have to pay quite a bit of money.

Of the disadvantages, you can highlight the fact that when you touch the ceiling sags, there is no feeling that it is "real". When installed, it is mounted at some distance from the real ceiling, as a result of which the height of the room is reduced.

Suspended

The most spectacular type of finishing. Various materials are used for it: metal, glass, plastic, plasterboard, mineral fiber, etc.

Read more in our article about suspended ceiling in the bathroom. From the article you will learn what types of suspended ceilings there are and how to perform installation.

The most commonly used material is plasterboard.

In a suspended ceiling, as well as in a suspended ceiling, it is convenient to mount lighting, hiding the wiring under the construction. It also helps to hide all the irregularities and other flaws in the surface, and it is not necessary to remove the cladding before installing it.

According to the principle of installation, there are often two types of ceilings: rack and tile.

Like a stretch ceiling, this kind of finish has a disadvantage - it "eats up" a significant amount of centimeters.

Plastic panels

Of the budget options, the ceiling, assembled from plastic panels, is the best choice. With high-quality installation, it looks solid and neat. In addition, plastic is a relatively inexpensive material.

You can use smooth glossy sheets, or try to play with the ceiling with different inserts.

The aluminum grid ceiling is quite hygienic and environmentally friendly. It is easy to clean, it is not afraid of exposure to detergents.

Wooden

To create an atmosphere of warmth and coziness is possible thanks to cladding the ceiling with wooden battens. Type of wood should be chosen taking into account the frequent changes in temperature and humidity indoors.

Siding

Despite the fact that the usual siding cladding facades of buildings, it is also suitable for interior decoration works. This is especially true for the arrangement of the ceiling in the bathroom. In this regard, siding copes well with its task, because it can withstand high humidity, unstable temperature, mechanical stress and cleaning by various means.

Another good thing about this material is its hygiene: it does not accumulate dirt and bacteria, it does not breed various insects, siding is not affected by fungus or mold, which is very often the main problem of bathrooms.

Gypsum board .

For finishing the ceiling in the bathroom is often used moisture-resistant plasterboard. With the help of this material, the ceiling can be turned into a real work of art. Sheets are most often attached to metal profiles.

The ceiling in the bathroom, made of plasterboard, can have several levels, steps, decorative straight curved elements. The final finish of such a ceiling is puttying and painting. In addition, it is possible to use decorative moldings and cornices.

Drywall ceiling in the bathroom

Unlike stretch ceilings, it does not sag when touched and looks quite natural.

Mirror

Hinged glass structures are most often carried out with the use of mirrors. A huge advantage of such a ceiling is its appearance. In addition to aesthetic qualities, another plus is the visual increase in the height of the ceiling. Such an effect cannot be achieved even if a glossy suspended ceiling is mounted.

With a photo print

Ceilings with photo printing require additional investments, but they look very unusual. Almost any picture can be put on the ceiling, which will effectively complement the interior of the bathroom. The ink used for printing is resistant to abrasion, moisture and temperature changes.

Please remember that the selection of prints for such a ceiling should be done with special care, so as not to overload the interior and not to make it too heavy.

Most often the picture is applied with ultraviolet printing on glass suspended panels. Enamel inks can also be used. For stretch ceilings, the design is applied directly to the PVC film. Firms that sell ceiling materials with photoprints offer ready-made templates, or can develop a new picture, as well as reprint the image suggested by customers.

Other modern materials

Quite often, foam polystyrene boards are used for installation of a false ceiling. This is a wear-resistant material that is easy to clean. It costs quite cheap. The boards are mounted directly to a clean and even ceiling surface using special adhesive, silicone or liquid nails. They can be painted or left in their original form. The problem can be that on a surface that is not perfectly flat, the joints will be quite difficult to disguise. In addition, the material is easy to damage with a sharp object and even your fingernails.

Tile ceiling in the bathroom

Vinyl wallpaper can also be used to cover the ceiling in the bathroom. However, it is necessary to take care of a powerful extractor so that under the influence of steam and condensation the wallpaper does not come off the surface of the ceiling. They can be washed and even brushed, and if desired, repainted.

Ceramic tiles are used quite rarely.

Very interesting looks the ceiling, lined with the same small mosaic as the other surfaces in the bathroom. A huge plus of such a coating - the ease of maintenance and durability

There are a huge number of different options for decorating the ceiling in the bathroom. Each of them should match the overall style of the bathroom. An example is an unusual ceiling in an oriental style bathroom.

Installation

Install the ceiling in the bathroom can be both independently and with the help of specialists.

For those types of ceiling that require a perfectly flat surface, it is necessary to make preparatory work.

  1. Initially it is necessary to remove the old coating. Both in apartments and in private homes, most often it is whitewash, which was left over from Soviet times. To remove it, it is necessary to soak the surface well, and then use a spatula to scrape off the softened layer of plaster.
  2. Then you need to rinse off the divorces, which usually takes quite a long time.
  3. After that, a layer of primer is applied and you can proceed to puttying.
  4. For better adhesion of the coating with the substrate, as well as to remove dust and other contaminants before painting or wallpapering, the ceiling should be re-treated with primer.

As for the installation of the stretch ceiling, it is better to use the services of professionals. In addition, in this case requires special equipment for heating the room. From metal profiles, a framework of the desired shape is mounted, and then with the help of a spatula the film is stretched on the ceiling.

Suspended ceilings are also mounted on a special framework. But in this case, it is not enough to arrange it on the perimeter. Also of great importance is the size of the ceiling elements. With the help of metal profiles and stringers, a purlin is mounted, on which plastic panels, battens, siding or metal strips are subsequently attached. By the way, strong wooden beams can be used to install wooden ceilings. When installing a glass ceiling, it should be taken into account that all elements of wiring and framing must be hidden behind the joints between the panels.

A plasterboard ceiling is installed in a slightly different way. Sheets of material are cut according to the required dimensions. All suspended elements are attached to the metal frame with self-tapping screws.

During the final facing, all the seams, joints and fixing places should be puttyed, and then carefully grouted to remove bumps and irregularities. Next, the ceiling is covered with water emulsion paint in several layers.

If the concrete ceiling slab is sufficiently even, you can do without preparatory work and not install a hinged structure overhead. Styrofoam boards and plasterboard can be used to install a false ceiling, i.e. to fix them directly to the ceiling surface with adhesive.

But if you want to add effective illumination to the ceiling, or place an ornament of LEDs, you can't do without a suspended ceiling.

With minor irregularities, you can use ceramic tiles and glass mosaics. Tile installation is carried out with the help of cement or special adhesive mortar. Translucent elements are attached only to a special white glue. In the end, it is necessary to treat the seams with a decorative grout.

Each of these types of ceiling finishing for the bathroom has its own advantages and disadvantages. In addition, everyone has his own preferences and is limited by different budget sizes. The final choice depends solely on these factors. In addition, the size of the bathroom and the intensity of its use should be taken into account.

I definitely choose a plasterboard suspended ceiling with lighting for the bathroom, because it is a place where you need to relax. Such lights and illumination will help to create the right atmosphere. My ceilings are high, no problem.
